Why is Tire Service Essential?
Of all the complex and state of the art components your car has, your tires are the only components that actually come into contact with the road. Your tires contribute to everything from optimal fuel economy to optimal acceleration, braking, and handling. Your tires can also help determine whether you power through that snow pile or slide when the road is wet.
Because tires play such a large role in your vehicle's performance, it's vital that you not only keep your tires well maintained but that you change them out when their life is coming to an end.
Failing to keep your tires in good health or a failure to replace them in a timely manner could mean that they fail you at the worst possible time, resulting in a loss of control while you're driving, or they could leave you stranded.
For pressure checks, tire tread checks, rotations, replacements, and more, trust none other than the experts here at Capital Eurocars.
How Do I Know When it's Time to Replace My Tires?
There are numerous factors that may signify that it's time to replace your tires.
Time - Your tires should be replaced if they've aged beyond six years, and should absolutely be changed after ten years. Even if you've still got tread left after ten years, the compounds of your tire have dried out beyond what is safe. You may notice tiny cracks in your tire from age, meaning that they could fail at the worst time.
Mileage - Generally, your tires will need replacing between 25,000 and 50,000 miles. However, this number is largely determined by your driving habits and the type of tires that your vehicle is using. For example, summer tires will not last as long as all-weather tires because they are made of a compound to maximize grip rather than maximize longevity like some all-weather tires.
Tread Depth - If your tires have worn beyond 2/32 of an inch, it's definitely time for tire replacement. While the most accurate way to measure your tread depth is with a tread gauge, the Penny Test is an age-old way to check whether or not you have sufficient tread depth. Simply stick a penny into the grooves on your tire. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, it's time for tire replacement.
What is a Tire Rotation and What Are the Benefits?
Tire rotation is the taking of your tires from the front of your vehicle and moving them to the back of your vehicle. Sometimes tires are even moved to the opposite side of the vehicle. This act promotes more even tread wear and helps to maximize the life of your tires.
While not every vehicle needs tire rotations because they might use different wheels for the front than the back, the act of a tire rotation is important because some vehicles feature more weight up front than in the back. While this factor may seem minimal, it makes a large difference to your tire life over time.
How to Care for Tires on My Mercedes-Benz?
To care for your tires, you want to make sure that they're properly inflated. Underinflated or overinflated tires are prone to premature failure or uneven wear, and, in the end, can cost you extra money due to their premature replacement.
You'll also want to make sure that your tires are properly aligned and rotated when they need to be to ensure that you get the most life out of them.
Lastly, you'll want to keep an eye on your tread wear to avoid driving in bald tires (tires with low tread).
